Simple Savory Millet Congee | 咸味小米粥

If you ever want to learn just one TCM recipe, this millet congee should be it! It is minimalistic but full of flavor but with major medicinal benefits! Millet is considered one of the most important and nourishing grains in TCM, and has been cultivated for more than 10,000 years! It is cooling, hydrating, and simply amazing for digestion. After having this congee, your digestive system will feel so smooth, content, and at ease!

This recipe is suitable for all seasons and constitutions. It is very easy and quick to make. The only thing that might make it tricky is buying the grain. We realize that in western markets, the millet being sold is not the same millet we use in China or in TCM. Make sure to purchase foxtail millet, it is smaller in size than what we're finding at our western markets, cooks faster, tastes different, and doesn't have the white "eye" on the grain.

I just made this recipe today and had to share how delicious it is. I used one of the digestion tonic bags in water and added some fresh shiitakes that I slightly sautéed beforehand. The only thing I’ll do differently next time is to steep the tonic bag in broth instead of water to give it a little more flavor. So good!

This is so tasty! I prepared it with your Liver Care Tonic and added a poached egg on top along with some wilted pea shoots. Your foxtail millet is my first taste of this type of millet and it surpasses all other varieties— it is so creamy. This made a very comforting and nourishing meal. Thank you so much for your recipes and guidance.
